FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Cortland hit three homers in the top of the seventh to erase a one-run deficit and roll to a 10-5 SUNYAC softball win on the final day of Fredonia's season. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to wet grounds.
The Blue Devils (11-23-1 overall, 4-13 SUNYAC) scored three times in the last of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. With one out in the top of the seventh, Cailey Cuttita hit a two-run homer, followed by a three-run homer by Skyler Holt, and a solo shot by Hannah Feldman.
All three homers came off
Sam Seegar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Starpoint), who came on in relief of starter
Katie Yudin (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool). Cortland's Sam Van Dorn pitched a complete game to get the win.
Fredonia's three-run rally in the fifth consisted of singles by freshman
Amber Piniewski (West Seneca, N.Y./Orchard Park), freshman
Makenzie Keeler (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt), and junior
Rhianna Paoletti (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), a sacrifice fly by senior
Katelyn Dennis (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder), and two Cortland errors.
Keeler opened the bottom of the first with her first collegiate homer and freshman
Alisa Oppenheimer (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) had an RBI single in the fifth to score Dennis, whose two-out single extended her career-ending hitting streak to 10 games.
Dennis and fellow senior
Lauren Pixley (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) were recognized prior to playing their final game as Blue Devils. Both were four-year players.
