AUBURNDALE, FLA -- The Fredonia bullpen kept Gordon College off the boards, and the hitters came around to score six runs late as the Fredonia baseball team rallied for a 6-3 win to complete the sweep of the Scots. The Devils took Game 1 by a score of 5-2 to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Ryan Landers (Fairport, N.Y. / Fairport),
Nicholas Lawlor (Webster, N.Y. / Webster-Schroeder), and
Steve Zaprowski (Williamsville, N.Y. / Williamsville South) combined for four innings of scoreless relief in support of starter
Nick Ciraolo (Clarence, N.Y. / Clarence).
Landers spun 1 1/3 innings and worked out of a first-and-third, no out situation to earn the win. He finished his day with a 12-pitch strikeout to end the fifth. Lawlor went and inning and a third, before Zaprowski came out of right field to strike out both batters he faced for the save.
The Devils were down 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth. After singles by
Joseph Coene (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Thomas) and
Patrick Sheehan (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Orchard Park),
Daniel Goodbread (Tully, N.Y. / Tully) roped a one-out double to plate the first run.
Joshua Crocetti (Hilton, N.Y. / Hilton) followed with another double to score two more.
J.T. Angora (Rochester, N.Y. / Rush Henrietta) tacked on two more in the sixth with a two-out single to score Coene and Zaprowski.
Zaprowski had an RBI single in the seventh to drive in the final run. Sheehan and Angora each had two hits for Fredonia. The duo also had a pair of hits in the opener.
Luke Kuczewski (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Orchard Park) tossed five innings allowing two hits and striking out seven to claim his second win of the season in Game 1.
The Devils scored three runs in the fourth. Goodbread plated the first run with a sacrifice fly. A groundout by Crocetti plated Sheehan.
Tyler McLoughlin (Hendersonville, Tenn. / Westmoreland) plated the final run on a base hit.
Fredonia added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Sheehan grounded to short and Zaprowski and Nicholas Fiore (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Thomas) scored on the wild throw.
Bailey Gauthier (Camillus, N.Y. / West Genesee) threw the final two innings striking out three for his third save.
"We continued to win the close games, which is a positive," said head coach
Matt Palisin. "We still have lot of work to do and have some pretty good team coming up tomorrow. We hope to see a lot of different faces contribute."
Gordon falls to 1-2.
The Devils take on William Paterson at 9 a.m. at Southeastern University on Saturday.
