VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Fredonia swept the Virginia portion of its spring softball trip, adding two more wins Saturday to its two wins Friday. The Blue Devils (4-0) defeated Penn College, 8-1, in the first Saturday. They then rolled over the College of New Rochelle, 10-2, in six innings.
Makenzie Keeler (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville DeWitt), a freshman, had three hits in each game, senior
Katelyn Dennis (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) two RBI in each game, and
Cassie Herman (Maybrook, N.Y./Valley Central) collected four RBI against New Rochelle.
Both Fredonia starting pitchers improved to 2-0. In the opener, sophomore
Katie Yudin (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) worked the first six innings before giving way to freshman
Lauren Collorone (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), who pitched a scoreless inning in her collegiate debut.
Sam Seegar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Starpoint), a sophomore, allowed five hits and struck out five in the second game.
A two-run single by Dennis capped a three-run rally in the third inning to erase a 1-0 deficit against Penn College.
Lauren Pixley (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier), a senior, had a two-run single in the fifth and Keeler an RBI double as part of a two-run sixth. Fredonia plated its final running on a Penn College throwing error in the seventh.
The Blue Devils scored three runs in each of the first two innings against New Rochelle. Keeler and Dennis had RBI singles in the first inning. All three runs in the second inning scored on a three-run homer to deep left center by Herman, her first homer as a collegian.
Fredonia kept adding to its lead. Dennis had an RBI double and Pixley an RBI single in the third.
Emma Isaac (Salamanca, N.Y./Salamanca), a freshman, delivered a pinch-hit RBI double in the fifth. The Blue Devils closed out the game by virtue of the mercy rule when Herman lined a bases-loaded single down the line in left with no outs in the sixth.
Fredonia now takes its act to central Florida for games at Clermont starting Tuesday, starting with a 4:30 p.m. meeting with U. Mass.-Boston, followed by a 7 p.m. game against Transylvania at Hancock Park.
