Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Flurry of threes too much

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The New Paltz three-point parade proved to be more than the Fredonia women's basketball team could handle Saturday afternoon, as they defeated the Devils, 61-43. The Hawks used 13 three-point baskets to their advantage. Conversely, Fredonia was one of 18 from long distance.

For the Devils (8-14 overall / 6-9 SUNYAC), Jacque Law (Lime Lake, N.Y. / Pioneer) led the team with 13 points and six assists. Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) added 10 points and eight rebounds. Jenna Einink contributed six points, nine rebounds and five blocks.

For the Hawks (13-7 / 9-4) Rachel Simon had five threes, and Lindsay Bettke and Marion Dietz both had three. Simon finished with a game-high 21 points, and Dietz had 14.

The first quarter was hotly contested with five lead changes and two ties. A pair of free throws by Law put the Devils up 8-7.

After the Hawks regained the lead, a layup late in the first by Sydney Turley tied the game at 16. Bettke then nailed a three to give the Hawks a 19-16 lead at the end of first. New Paltz held the lead the remainder of the game.

Simon made a three and a layup at the 8:08 mark of the second to put New Paltz up 24-16. They would lead 34-27 at the half. Simon had 18 points for the Hawks, including four of six from three-point range. Law led the Devils with eight points and four assists, and Einink had six points and six rebounds.

The Devils hung around late in the third. Following a pair of free throws by Chiacchia, they pulled within five points, 40-35, with 2:02 left. New Paltz closed the quarter up 48-37 when Dietz hit an off-balance buzzer beater.

The Hawks kept the lead in double digits the entire fourth quarter.

Prior to the game, Law was recognized for joining the 1,000-Point Club. She accomplished that feat last weekend on the road at Buffalo State. She is the 11th player in team history to reach that mark. She currently stands at 1,046 career points.

The team travels to Cortland and Oswego next weekend.
