FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia men's basketball team closed out its season with a 90-85 loss to Buffalo State on Saturday.
Ian Helps (Bronx, N.Y. / Greater New York Academy) had 23 points and
Justin Tapper (White Plains, N.Y. / White Plains) had 15. Dante Williams (Buffalo, N.Y. / Hutch Tech) had a double-double, with 13 points and 11 boards.
Kay Jackson (Ridgewood, N.Y. / Grover Cleveland) was the fourth Devil in double digits with 12 points.
Keith Ruiz (Rockville Centre, N.Y. / South Side) opened the game with a three pointer, which was matched by Buff State's Sheldon Adams.The teams tied at 5-all and 7-all before Buff State took the lead with a layup from Zion Guzman and a pair of jumpers from Mike Henry to go up 13-7.
They would expand the lead to 15 following an 8-0 run, leading 33-18 at the 7:55 mark. Still trailing by the same amount, 37-22, Fredonia rattled off nine straight -- the first four coming from
Jonathan McDonald (Brooklyn, N.Y. / High School for Public Service), and the last five coming from Jackson to cut the lead to six.
A layup by Jackson inside the last minute of the half pulled the Devils to within three, 41-38
Buff State would lead 45-40 at the break. McDonald led the Devils with eight points, and Mike Henry had 16 for the Bengals.
Four minutes into the second half, Fredonia tied the game at 52-all following a three-point play from Helps.
The teams tied three more times before the Devils took their first lead of the game, 60-58, following a steal by Jackson led to a fast-break layup by
Isaiah Ice (Bronx, N.Y. / Iona Prep).
There were two more ties before the Bengals scored four straight layups to go up 70-62, forcing Fredonia to regroup in a time out.
A short jumper in the key and a gritty inside layup by Helps cut the lead to four with 3:21 remaining.
After a three by Buff State's Malik Turner, Helps would connect on two more layups, making it an 83-80 game with just over two minutes to go.
After a bucket by the Bengals on the following possession, the Devils slowed the game by fouling, and could not catch up.
Buff State (9-15 overall / 5-13 SUNYAC) was led by Henry with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Sir Quinton Campbell had 16 off the bench.
Prior to the game, the Blue Devils honored their seniors. Helps, Ruiz, Jackson, Williams, Tapper, and
Brian Baril (Cambria Heights, N.Y. / Monsignor Scanlan). Helps finished his career in third place on the Blue Devils all-time scoring list with 1,466 points.
