UTICA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia men's basketball team led at the half, but could not hang on in a 74-62 loss to Anna Maria in the consolation game of the Utica College Tournament on Sunday. DeQuan Smith (Rochester, N.Y. / Penfield) led Fredonia with a 21-point effort.
Fredonia led for the majority of the first half, but never by more than four points. A three-pointer by
Colden George (North Java, N.Y. / Attica) gave Fredonia its first four-point lead at the 7:04 mark and put the Devils up 23-19. At the break, the Devils held a 34-32 lead.
A pair of layups by
Cody Johnson (Cassadaga, N.Y. / Cassadaga Valley) and a basket by Smith gave the Devils an eight-point lead early in the second half. Fredonia held a lead until the 11:56 mark when Anna Maria's Sidney Limage converted a layup to put his team ahead, 46-45.
The lead changed three more times until, tied 55-all, Anna Maria's Angel Perez hit a three-pointer at the six-minute mark to give the Amcats the lead for good. It was the start of a 14-3 run.
Mark Morgan (Bronx, N.Y. / South Bronx Prepartory) and
Bediako Nyasa (Harlem, N.Y. / Walton) each had eight points for Fredonia.
Isaiah Ice (Bronx, N.Y. / Iona Prep) had four assists, and
Gary Sykes (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Bedford Academy) had a team-high six rebounds.
Mike Rapoza finished with 15 points and 19 rebounds for the Amcats. Perez had a team-high 19 points on 5-of-11 from the floor. All five of his baskets were three-pointers. Limage added 16 points and nine rebounds.Â
The Blue Devils now stand at 0-9.
