FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia's furious late-game rally fell short Tuesday in a 81-78 men's basketball loss to Waynesburg at Dods Hall.
Down by 12 points with 3:26 to go, the Blue Devils (0-3) made it a one-possession game in the final minute before a last-second three-point shot missed the mark.
De'Quan Smith (Rochester, N.Y. / Penfield) led Fredonia with 16 points and
Kadeem Riddick (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Erasmus Hall) added 15. Each had a three-point basket in a final minute as part of a closing 13-4 run.
Matt Popeck led Waynesburg (1-2) with 27 points and Frank Bozicevic had 15.
A three-point basket by Shane Johnson gave Waynesburg its largest lead, 77-65, before the Blue Devils began cutting into the deficit.
Isaiah Ice (Bronx, N.Y. / Iona Prep) made five of eight free throws before Popeck went to the line and sank two shots for Waynesburg. Fredonia's
Bediako Nyasa (Bronx, N.Y. / Walton Campus) connected on a jumper, and Smith made his three to cut the Waynesburg lead to 79-75 with 35 seconds left.
The three-pointer by Riddick put the Blue Devils within three points with 19 seconds left. Fredonia nearly stole the ensuing inbounds pass, then was forced to foul.
After Waynesburg missed both free throws, Smith grabbed the rebound and the Blue Devils hurried up the floor for their final shot -- a three-point try by
Matt Perez (Miami, Fla.) off the back of the rim.
The Blue Devils have a long break before returning to action Dec. 1 against Buffalo State at Dods Hall.Â
