BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Fredonia fell to 11-2 overall and 3-2 in the SUNYAC with a 7-2 women's tennis loss Friday to Oneonta.
The Blue Devils earned both their points in singles competition with wins by No. 4 player
Mikayla Johnson (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern) and No. 5 player
Jane Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg).
Johnson rallied for her point. She lost the first set 6-2 to Olivia Fraser, then roared to a 6-1 win in the second set, following by a successful 10-8 tiebreaker.
Chiacchia's victory over Alli Dratch was tight throughout. Dratch took the first set 7-6, and Chiacchia the second set 7-6 and the tiebreaker 10-7.
In the process, Chiacchia improved to 12-1 this season -- the 12 wins representing a single-season school record.
The match was Fredonia's first of three over the weekend at the Binghamton Tennis Center. The Blue Devils are back in action against New Paltz at 1 p.m. Saturday, then close out the set at 10 a.m. Sunday vs. Plattsburgh.
The Blue Devils, in fourth place after play Friday, are looking to land one of the top four spots in order to advance to the SUNYAC Tournament next weekend.
