Nil-nil tie keeps Devils in playoff hunt

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia earned one more point in its bid to claim a SUNYAC women's soccer playoff spot with a scoreless tie Saturday with the Oswego Lakers.

The Blue Devils ended the day in fifth place with 10 points (3-3-1) with two regular-season games left -- next Friday at Plattsburgh and next Saturday at Potsdam. The top six teams make the conference tournament. The Blue Devils are 7-8-1 overall.

Sophomore goalkeeper Abbey Monahan (Warsaw, N.Y./Warsaw) made eight saves to record her third shutout of the season. Her stop of a close-range header late in the regulation proved to be a key stop. Oswego goalkeeper Emma Allen was credited with three saves, none bigger than a diving stop of a low shot by Fredonia freshman Brooke Browning (Farnham, N.Y./Lake Shore) during the first overtime.

It was a 10-minute extra period controlled by the Blue Devils, who otherwise had trouble gaining traction on offense. They were outshot 26-8 overall, with four of those shots coming during the first overtime. Oswego also had a wide advantage in corner kicks, 11-1.

The Lakers -- 5-6-2 overall and 2-3-2 in SUNYAC -- controlled the flow during the first half yet neither team had a dangerous shot. The closest either team came to scoring was midway through the half, when two Lakers were unable to get a foot on a cross into the box by Liz Myers. The best Fredonia opportunity came in the 43rd minute when sophomore Lauren Cullinan (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) put a short through ball into the box, where freshman Karen Johnson (Jamestown, N.Y./Southwestern) was running. Allen came off the goal line and arrived a half-step ahead of Johnson and steered the ball away.

Fredonia seniors Abby Price (Naples, N.Y./Naples) and Kendall Owczarzak (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) were recognized prior to their final regular-season home game.
