FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Tied at 50-all early in the second half, the Fredonia men's basketball team faded down the stretch, dropping an 82-74 game to Potsdam.
Ian Helps (Bronx, N.Y. / Greater New York Academy) turned in one of the top performances in his career, scoring 31 points and grabbing 13 boards.
Isaiah Ice (Bronx, N.Y. / Iona Prep) and
Brian Baril (Cambria Heights, N.Y. / Monsignor Scanlan) added 11 points apiece.
Helps shot 10 of 18 from the floor, and 11 of 13 from the free-throw line.
Potsdam led by as many as 14 in the first half. Leading 36-22, the Devils outscored Potsdam 20-6 over the final 7:13 to take a 42-42 tie into halftime. Helps scored 12 of the team's points over that stretch.
Following the tie at 50, Potsdam went on a 17-5 run to take its biggest lead of the second half, 67-55. Potsdam matched the 12-point lead with 3:12 left to play. Consecutive baskets by Baril, Helps, and Dante Williams cut the lead to six with 1:13 left.
Potsdam scored its final six point from the free-throw line to close out the game.
The teams combined for 47 fouls in the contest, with the Devils committing 27 of them. Fredonia shot 24 of 29 from the line, with Potsdam converting 25 of 34 charity attempts.
Fredonia won the battle on the boards, 38-37. They shot 37 percent from the floor compared to 46 percent for Potsdam.
Potsdam (6-5, 2-3 SUNYAC) was led by Danny Delsol-Lowry with 20 points, while Dante Langly and Nosa Onabor had 15 apiece.
Fredonia (2-9, 0-5 SUNYAC) plays host to Plattsburgh on Saturday at 3 p.m.
