FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's basketball team got off three attempts in the closing seconds, but could not convert the lucky three, falling to Brockport 49-46 on Tuesday.
Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) was one of only two players for either team to score in double figures, leading the Devils (6-7 SUNYAC / 8-12 overall) with 10 points. Schyler Laux led Brockport (8-5 / 10-10) with 15 -- all coming from three-point range.
Einink added a team-high seven rebounds, and
Jacque Law (Lime Lake, N.Y. / Pioneer) had nine points and three assists.
Justice Nauden (Waterport, N.Y. / Albion) had eight points on four of five shooting.
Fredonia scored 19 points in the first half on four of 15 shooting (27 percent). The Devils were four of four from the line. Brockport shot 46 percent (five of 11), and held a 21-19 lead at the half. They also outrebounded the Devils 20-15, but committed twice as many turnovers, 8-4, than Fredonia.
Brockport's biggest lead of the half was 19-10. Fredonia went on a 9-2 run over the final five minutes to pull within two by the break.
The Golden Eagles upped the lead to 10 points, 37-27, on a 6-0 run with 3:35 left in the third.
Jacque Law broke the string with the traditional three-point play, followed by a layup by
Alexis Grissom (Jamestown, N.Y. / Jamestown). A Grissom block on the defensive end led directly to a fast break by Nauden to make it a three-point game.
Back-to-back jumpers by Brockport made it 41-34 at the end of three.
Midway through the fourth, Brockport began to pull away on an 8-2 run. It was started by a Laux three, and ended by a Laux three to give Brockport a 49-40 lead with 3:08 to play.
Back-to-back layups by Chiacchia and Einink cut the lead to five and forced the Golden Eagles to call a time out.
Fredonia forced a turnover after a shot clock violation. Law nailed a pair of free throws with 1:30 to cut the Brockport lead to three, 49-46 .
Fredonia forced another turnover with 1:14 to go but could not convert. After a defensive stop, Fredonia had the ball with 18.1 left coming out of a timeout.
Einink fired up a three attempt that the Devils rebounded. Law took the second attempt and missed. Brockport missed a pair of free throws with 0.9 seconds on the clock. Another timeout advanced the ball for the Devils.
Jayla James fired up one last attempt that missed to end the game.
Fredonia was slowed by an uncharacteristic three of 10 shooting from the foul line in the second half. Brockport was four of six after not taking an attempt the entire first half.
The Devils gave themselves a chance in the fourth quarter, holding Brockport to just two of 10 shooting from the field. However, they converted just five of 20 attempts themselves.
The Blue Devils continue a busy week in Dods Hall with home games Friday and Saturday. Saturday's women's game will be held in conjunction with National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Tip off is slated for 1 p.m. Later that evening, the hockey team will play host to the annual Pink the Rink game at 7 p.m. Sandwiched in between will be the men's basketball game at 3 p.m.
