FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Mac Wood scored two goals to lead Buffalo State over Fredonia, 4-3, in SUNYAC men's hockey Saturday at Steele Hall.
Zach Remers and Anthony Passero also scored for the Bengals (15-4-2 overall / 8-2-2 SUNYAC), who entered the week ranked No. 14 in both NCAA Division III hockey polls.
Josh Biasillo (Orchard Park, N.Y.),
Jacob Haynes (Whitby, Ont.), and
Sam Wilbur (Saginaw, Mich.) scored for the Blue Devils (8-8-3 overall / 4-6-0 SUNYAC). They were also defeated 6-5 on Friday in Buffalo.
The Blue Devils outshot the Bengals, 39-21, and Buffalo State goaltender Ian Sylves made 36 saves.
Eric Bogart (London, Ont.) had 17 saves in the Fredonia net.
Fredonia jumped to a 2-0 lead on goals by Biasillo and Haynes. They had entered the game with a 7-1-1 record when scoring first.
The first goal was a fluke. Skating through the neutral zone, Biasillo bounced the puck off the right boards as he and his teammates were entering the offensive zone. Sylves had already started behind his net and could not pivot in time as the puck bounced into the net for Biasillo's fifth goal of the season.
Haynes's shot from the high slot to make it 2-0 at 17:42 of the first period came directly off a faceoff win by Wilbur. It was the fourth goal of the season by Haynes.
Buffalo State then scored the next four goals. Wood's 12th of the season at 18:39 of the first period was a backhander off a rebound. He then tallied his 13th on a power play at 9:19 of the second period when he weaved through traffic and shoved the puck inside the right post. Remers put the Bengals ahead 3-2 with his seventh goal at 15:38 of the second with a slapshot from the left circle following a dot-to-dot pass. Passero netted the game-winner when he took a pass in the crease from the left sideboards at 5:18 of the third. It was his fifth goal of the season
Wilbur's ninth goal off a scramble in front of the net made it 4-3 with 27 seconds remaining. The Blue Devils had two extra skaters at the time -- one as a result of a Buffalo State penalty, the other with Bogart pulled in favor of the extra attacker.
The loss dropped the Blue Devils into a fifth-place tie with Plattsburgh and just one point ahead of Brockport and two points ahead of Cortland and Morrisville.Â
