FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's soccer team earned its first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over D'Youville in the opening round of the Blue Devil Classic on Friday. Junior
Abby Price (Naples, N.Y. / Naples) had a wide-open look in the 66th minute and connected for her first goal of the season. She was assisted by
Shania Platt (Chaffee, N.Y. / Pioneer).
Both teams battled to a scoreless first half.
Freshman goaltender
Marissa Quimby (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) made seven saves in her first collegiate shutout for the Devils. With 3:45 left in the game, Quimby made a spectacular diving save to keep the lead. She also made a diving block on a breakaway as time expired to preserve the win.
Megan Dulniak had five saves for the Spartans.
The Devils out-shot the Spartans 15-10. D'Youville held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Earlier in the day, Oswego defeated Penn State Behrend, 2-1, in overtime. The Classic wraps up on Saturday when Fredonia plays Behrend, and D'Youville takes on Oswego State. Both games will kick off at 1:30 p.m. The Devils and Behrend play in the Stadium, while the D'Youville/Oswego tilt is on the turf field.
