Cortland turns back determined Devils

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia made a valiant bid to upset nationally ranked Cortland before falling 12-7 Saturday in SUNYAC women's lacrosse.

The Red Dragons (7-2 overall, 2-0 SUNYAC), ranked No. 9 in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll, outshot the Blue Devils 34-18.

The loss dropped Fredonia to 2-9 overall and 1-2 in the SUNYAC. They are back in action Tuesday at Brockport.

Playing in her hometown, Fredonia sophomore Monica Van Donsel (Cortland, N.Y.) had three goals -- all late in the game -- while Audrey Yokopovich (Webster, N.Y.) and Katie Miller (Hamburg, N.Y.) had two goals each.

Despite being outshot 21-9, the Blue Devils trailed just 6-4 at halftime. In addition, Cortland had an 8-3 advantage in draw controls while the Blue Devils were guilty of nine turnovers. Nicole Burrows (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) made seven saves while Miller and Yokopovich had both their goals in the first half.

Cortland held leads of 3-0 and 4-1 before Fredonia rallied with back-to-back goals, the first by Yokopovich on a rebound and the second by Miller cutting to the net off a pass from Samantha Spiess (Fairport, N.Y.).

Fredonia won the opening draw of the second half and had a chance to pull back within one goal but Jaclyn Beshlian stopped a shot by Spiess from the left flank. Beshlian stopped Miller the next time down the field ahead of a free-position goal by Hannah Elmer to reestablish Cortland's three-goal lead.

A free-position goal by Van Donsel ended a 4-0 Cortland run and cut the Fredonia deficit to 10-5 with 11:54 remaining. Van Donsel scored again on a free-position shot with 6:40 to go. The Blue Devils had several possessions to cut the deficit further but were turned aside. Van Donsel completed the scoring inside the final two minutes.

Yokopovich was Fredonia's top field player with four draw controls and five caused turnovers. She and Burrows each had four groundballs.
