POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Fredonia started its final weekend of the season with a 1-0 win in eight innings Friday over Potsdam. The Blue Devils dropped the second game, 7-3.
It took one extra inning to decide the opener.
Madison Cooley (Geneva, N.Y.) lined the single to center to lead off the eighth inning. With two strikes, Lauren Pixley (Hamburg, N.Y.) dropped a sacrifice bunt to move Cooley to second. She raced home when
Katelyn Dennis (Webster, N.Y.) lined a double over the head of the right-fielder.
With two outs and a runner on first in the last of the eighth, Pixley made a diving catch in the left-center gap for the final out and preserve the shutout.
Katie Yudin (Liverpool, N.Y.) held the Bears scoreless on four hits with three strikeouts. She improved to 7-9 on the season.
The Blue Devils broke on top in the fourth inning of Game 2. With two outs,
Khee Nance (Dunkirk, N.Y.) doubled to right-center, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Yudin. An error and stolen base put runners on second and third for Pixley, who singled in two runs for a 3-0 Fredonia lead. Potsdam countered with three runs of their own in the last of the fourth and grabbed the lead with four runs in the fifth.
