FREDONIA, N.Y. -- When the ball left her bat in the last of the seventh, Fredonia senior
Katelyn Dennis (Webster, N.Y.) was looking for her third homer of the game -- and a walk-off winner.
Instead the ball was caught on the warning track in left-center, in the same area where her previous two homers had flown, and a runner scored from third. Yet that's where the Blue Devil rally ended in a 7-6 setback to the Brockport Golden Eagles.
Fredonia won the opener, 4-2, behind the pitching and hitting of freshman
Katie Yudin (Liverpool, N.Y.). She tossed a complete-game five-hitter with five strikeouts. She also hit her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot in the fifth inning to put Fredonia up 2-1. The Blue Devils added insurance runs in the sixth on RBI hits by
Madison Cooley (Geneva, N.Y.) and Yudin, who finished with three hits in Game 1.
Yudin was also the starting pitcher in Game 2. The Blue Devils fell behind 7-1 in the third inning before beginning to rally. Dennis had a solo homer in the third and a two-run homer in the fifth, her fourth and fifth of the season. She came to bat with one out in the seventh following a double by Yudin and a single by
Lauren Pixley (Hamburg, N.Y.). Dennis's long drive to the track scored Yudin, who had three more hits. Brockport reliever Becky Knorr got the final out on a strikeout to earn a save. Michaela Contreras was the winning pitcher.
Also Saturday, Fredonia's four seniors were recognized in a pre-game ceremony.
Erin Mushtare (Ooneonta, N.Y.) and
Maddy Stavish (Olean, N.Y.) were four-year players and co-captains as seniors, while
Khee Nance (Dunkirk, N.Y.) and
Sarah Cuillo (Blasdell, N.Y.) joined the program as juniors. They will play their final home games Sunday when the Blue Devils and Geneseo meet at noon in a SUNYAC doubleheader.
