HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Cortland used a pair of busy first innings to key a SUNYAC sweep of Fredonia on Friday. Cortland took the opener 14-0 and claimed the nightcap, 11-3. The doubleheader was played at Houghton College.
In Game 1, the Devils were only able to muster three hits against the Cortland pitching staff. The Red Dragons used a three-run first and three-run second to take charge. Starter Michael WIlcox (Kennedy, N.Y. / Falconer) took the loss for the Devils, falling to 2-2 this season.
Cortland, the No. 2 ranked team in DIII, was spotted five runs in the top of the first in Game 2. They would lead 8-0 before the Devils got on the board.
Ciro Frontale (Syracuse, N.Y. / Bishop Ludden) drove in
Christian Rizzolo (Fairport, N.Y. / Fairport) with a base hit in the fifth. Rizzolo -- making his first college start -- had singled earlier in the inning.
Fredonia struck again in the bottom of the sixth.
James Krolikowski (Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster) was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a double by
Alexio Medina (Elma, N.Y. / Iroquois). Krolikowski scored when
Matt Wilhelm (Williamsville, N.Y. / Amherst) singled him in.
Rizzolo would add and RBI in the eighth to make it 8-3. Krolikowski and Wilhelm singled to set the table. The Devils ended the inning with the bases loaded.
Cortland tacked on three in the ninth to give the final.
Starter
Ben Atkinson (Syracuse, N.Y. / Syracuse East) took the loss, going 3 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs.
Lucas Schaefer (Depew, N.Y. / St. Mary's) finished the game, tossing 5 2/3 innings of relief, yielding three earned runs on six hits, striking out four.
Medina finished with three hits, while Krolikowski, Rizzolo, and Wilhelm each added a pair of safeties. Fredonia collected 11 hits as a team.
Cortland improved to 14-3.
The Devils (8-10) are off until next weekend when they travel to Oneonta for a three-game set.
