Dennis homers twice, Yudin goes the distance

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Katelyn Dennis (Webster, N.Y.) hit three-run homers in each game Sunday as Fredonia split a pair of games at The Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.

The Blue Devils (6-4) defeated Framingham State, 7-1, after losing to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 8-4, at Hancock Park. Freshman righthander Katie Yudin (Liverpool, N.Y.) pitched a complete-game eight-hitter in the nightcap.

Dennis's second homer of the day capped a six-run sixth-inning which broke a 1-1 tie vs. Framingham. Nikki Lent (Yaphank, N.Y.) had a two-run single during the uprising. Khee Nance (Dunkirk, N.Y.) also had two hits.

Down 1-0, the Blue Devils scored their first run with alert baserunning. Nance drew a lead-off walk. After two flys to center, Yudin beat out an infield single with Nance advancing from first to third. Yudin then creeped into second and when Framingham State threw to second, Nance raced home with the tying run.

Mallory Mecca (Derby, N.Y.) singled to left and Sarah Cuillo (Blasdell, N.Y.) beat out a bunt to open the Fredonia sixth. After a walk loaded the bases, Fredonia took the lead, 2-1, on an illegal pitch. Lent then singled through the middle to drive in two runs. Nance dropped a bunt single ahead of the three-run homer by Dennis to straightaway center.

Yudin pitched a scoreless seventh to improve to 3-1 on the season.

In Fredonia's 8-4 loss to RPI, the Engineers broke open a 2-2 game with six runs in the fourth of Game 1. Fredonia pitchers issued five walks in the inning and all of them scored.

The Blue Devils got two runs back in the fifth on a two-run homer to straight-away center by Dennis, her first of the season. Earlier, Erin Mushtare (Oneonta, N.Y.) had an RBI single in the first inning and Madison Cooley (Geneva, N.Y.) had an RBI single in the second to give Fredonia a 2-1 lead. The Blue Devils wasted a scoring chance in the third when Nance was stranded after a lead-off triple.
