LAKE MYRTLE / WINTER HAVEN, FLA. -- The Fredonia baseball team rallied for two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to claim 7-5 victory over Vassar. on Sunday Both runs in the ninth came courtesy of wild pitches by Vassar.
Kole Brink and
Steve Zaprowski each drove in a run in the eighth.
Lucas Schaefer picked up the win in two inning of relief. The senior hurler surrendered a run in the eighth before striking out the side in the ninth.
Fredonia grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the second.
Kevin Yirinec led off with a double and was plated by
Alexio Medina's single.
Steve Zaprowski doubled in Medina, before coming around to score on an infield error off the bat of Brink.
Following the rally, the heavens opened forcing a delay. The teams then drove across town -- from Winter Haven to Lake Myrtle -- to pick up in the bottom of the second.
Fredonia starting pitcher
Ben Atkinson tossed three scoreless before surrendering a pair in the fourth. Atkinson threw an inning in Winter Haven before tossing the second inning about two hours later in Lake Myrtle.
Vassar got to Atkinson for a pair of runs in the fourth and left with a pair of runners on in the fifth. Vassar managed to get both runners in off reliever
Ryan Landers before Landers settled in to toss three scoreless frames. Landers surrendered two hits and struck out three in three innings of work.
Zaprowski finished with three hits, and Medina,
Liam Kelly and
Jon Morrison finished with two hits each.
The Devils are off Monday before taking on SUNY Farmingdale on Tuesday.
