Gerhardson nets winner in nick of time

CANTON, N.Y. -- Fredonia's Oskar Gerhardson (Haessleholm, Sweden) scored with 1.5 seconds left in regulation to boost the Blue Devils over SUNY Canton, 5-4, in men's college hockey Friday.

Gerhardson's goal was his third of the season and his first game-winner. It enabled the Blue Devils to improve to 10-8-2 heading into Saturday's rematch at Canton starting at 3 p.m.

The Kangaroos fell to 7-13-2.

Marcus Ortiz (Richardson, Texas) had a three-point game, a goal and two assists. His second an assist came on Gerhardson's goal. Ortiz's goal, his ninth, put Fredonia on top 2-0 late in the first period.

Tommy DeFelice (Tolland, Conn.), Bobby Polacek (Kingston, Pa.), and Jacob Haynes (Whitby, Ont.) had the other Fredonia goals. For Haynes, a freshman, it was his team-leading 10th goal this season and put the Blue Devils on top 4-1.

Haynes and DeFelice also had one assist each. Kyle Jelinski (Edmonton, Alberta) collected two assists.

The Kangaroos rallied with three unanswered goals off Fredonia freshman goaltender Anton Rosen (Orsa, Sweden). Rosen finished with 22 saves as he improved to 2-1-1.

Canton won the special-teams battle: 3 of 6 on the power play and 4 of 4 on the penalty kill.
