Red Dragons drop Blue Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Fredonia men's basketball team fell, 75-56, to Cortland on Saturday afternoon.

The Devils were led by Kareem Brown (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Brooklyn HS for Law & Tech) with 17 points and Richard De La Cruz (Washington Heights, N.Y. / Norman Thomas) with 12. Brown and De La Cruz combined to go 7 of 14 from beyond the arc.

Cortland began the game hitting nine of its first 11 shots, including threes on four straight possessions. However, the Devils kept pace and only trailed two, 19-17, following a jumper by Brown with 13:47 left.

Leading 24-21, Cortland then went on an 8-0 run to go up by 11. A pair of free throws by Justin Cooper made it 32-21 in favor of the visitors.

Cortland would lead by as many as 13 in the first half, taking a 43-30 lead into the locker room.

They increased their lead to as many as 18 in the second half. 

Fredonia cut the lead to ten, 64-54, following a three pointer by Brown with 5:14 left to play. At that point, Fredonia's previous 21 points came from six three-pointers and a three point play.  

The  Devils would get no closer than that the rest of the way.

The Red Dragons (11-5 SUNYAC / 16-7 overall) were led by Zach Lydon with 22 points and eight rebounds.

Fredonia hit 9 of 21 three pointers (43 percent), while Cortland was 10 of 20. Cortland shot 55 percent from the field compared to 40 percent for Fredonia, and held a 32-28 edge in rebounds.

The Devils celebrated Senior Day, honoring Brown, De La Cruz and Jovohn Owens (Buffalo, N.Y. / Hutch Tech) in pre-game ceremonies.

Fredonia falls to 7-10 in the SUNYAC and 10-14 overall. The Devils travel to Buffalo State next weekend.
