Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Devils let one slip away

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Leading by ten points with five minutes remaining in the game, the Fredonia women's basketball team could not hang on, falling 63-62 to Oswego on Friday. The Lakers closed the game outscoring the Devils 16-5.

Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, N.Y. / Lockport) led all scorers with 23 points, including six three pointers. Jacque Law (Machias, N.Y. / Pioneer) added 14 points and Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) had her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 boards.

Alisha Szumigala (Forestville, N.Y. / Forestville) added eight points and nine rebounds. Sarah Sweazy (Rochester, N.Y. / Rush-Henrietta) was the only other Blue Devil to score, with four points.

Mary Mazzella was one of four Lakers in double digits, finishing with 17 points.

Fredonia opened the game on a 10-0 run. Then, leading 14-4, the Lakers ripped off ten in a row to tie the game at 14. By the half, Oswego hung on to a 26-25 lead.

In the third quarter, with the Lakers up 28-25, Fredonia went on a 14-2 run to take a nine-point lead.

Oswego would not give in, scoring the final three points of the third quarter, all on free throws, to close the gap to four points, 45-41.

Fredonia worked its way to a 57-47 lead at the 5:07 mark before the Lakers closed strong. Oswego rattled off the next nine points before a layup from Einink stopped the scoring binge, leaving the Devils with a 59-56 lead.

The Lakers then scored the next seven before Cheatham nailed the game's final basket -- a three pointer. Fredonoia was unable to get a clean look in their final possession.

The Devils wrap up the home portion of the regular season against Cortland on Saturday at 4 p.m.
