FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Leading by ten points with five minutes remaining in the game, the
Fredonia women's basketball team could not hang on, falling 63-62 to Oswego on
Friday. The
Lakers closed the game outscoring the Devils 16-5.
Alexis Cheatham (
Lockport, N.Y. /
Lockport) led all scorers with 23 points, including six three pointers.
Jacque Law (
Machias, N.Y. / Pioneer) added 14 points and Jenna
Einink (Westfield, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) had her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 boards.
Alisha
Szumigala (
Forestville, N.Y. /
Forestville) added eight points and nine rebounds. Sarah
Sweazy (Rochester, N.Y. / Rush-Henrietta) was the only other Blue Devil to score, with four points.
Mary
Mazzella was one of four
Lakers in double digits, finishing with 17 points.
Fredonia opened the game on a 10-0 run. Then, leading 14-4, the
Lakers ripped off ten in a row to tie the game at 14. By the half, Oswego hung on to a 26-25 lead.
In the third quarter, with the
Lakers up 28-25,
Fredonia went on a 14-2 run to take a nine-point lead.
Oswego would not give in, scoring the final three points of the third quarter, all on free throws, to close the gap to four points, 45-41.
Fredonia worked its way to a 57-47 lead at the 5:07 mark before the
Lakers closed strong. Oswego rattled off the next nine points before a layup from
Einink stopped the scoring binge, leaving the Devils with a 59-56 lead.
The
Lakers then scored the next seven
before Cheatham nailed the game's final basket -- a three pointer. Fredonoia was unable to get a clean look in their final possession.
The Devils wrap up the home portion of the regular season against Cortland on Saturday at 4 p.m.
