FREDONIA, N.Y. --
Marcus Ortiz (Richardson, Texas) celebrated Senior Night with two goals and
Eric Bogart stopped 31 of 32 shots to lead Fredonia over nationally ranked Geneseo, 5-1, in SUNYAC men's hockey Friday night.
Ortiz's first goal of the night proved to be the game-winner while his second goal capped the Blue Devils' night against the No. 6 ranked Knights.
Ryan Dunn ( Rockland, Mass.),
Jimmy Morgan (Highlands Ranch, Col.), and
Todd Schauss (Terryville, Conn.) had Fredonia's other goals.
Bogart improved to 8-6-1 this season while the Blue Devils upped their record to 12-8-2 overall and 6-6-1 in the SUNYAC. They are back in action Saturday night at Brockport with a chance to clinch a playoff spot.
The Knights dropped to 14-5-3 overall and 8-4-1 in the conference.
Dunn opened the scoring at 8:19 of the first period with his third goal of the season when he tapped the puck home off a 2-on-1 rush with
Oskar Gerhardson (Haessleholm, Sweden). Ortiz made it 2-0 Fredonia when he broke in alone and muscled around a defenseman to get his shot off for his 10th goal.
Morgan's ninth goal made it 3-0 at 4:16 of the second period when he scored from the slot after taking a pass from behind the cage.
Jacob Haynes (Whitby, Ont.) and
Samuel Wilbur (Saginaw, Mich.) earned assists.
Fifteen seconds later, Geneseo's Arthur Gordon cut the margin to 3-1 before Schauss got the goal back when he cashed in from the right wing after receiving a pass from Morgan coming down the left side. It was the seventh goal of the season for Schauss. Dunn picked up the second assist.
Ortiz completed the scoring with a snap shot while trailing the play and receiving a pass from
Hunter Long (Lebanon, Tenn.).
Mac McAvoy (Port Colborne, Ont.) also assisted.
Fredonia improved to 7-5-1 at home, 9-1-2 when leading after one period, and 10-0-1 when leading after two. They are also 10-2-2 when scoring the first goal.
