Blue Devils advance to SUNYAC Championship

BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's volleyball team is advancing to the SUNYAC Championship match after defeating Geneseo Friday evening.

The Blue Devils swept the Knights in three sets in the semifinal round (25-19, 25-22, 25-20). They will face the winner of Friday's other semifinal round match between New Paltz and Brockport on Saturday at 5 p.m.

"Geneseo is a great volleyball team," Head Coach Geoff Braun said. "We knew going into today that we had to keep pressure on them so they couldn't run their offense against us. I thought we did a great job of doing that from start to finish today."

Down 17-10 in the second set, the Blue Devils rallied behind seven kills from Kristen Stanek (Hamburg, N.Y.) to win the set, 25-22. Stanek finished the match with 14 kills.

"We couldn't lose our focus," Stanek said of the second set. "We were down by a lot of points at one time, but we had to stay on track and keep serving tough and hitting tough. We couldn't let up at all."

Hallie Christopher (Clarence, N.Y.) ran the offense for the Blue Devils, finishing with 28 assists.

"It's the fight that we have," Christopher said of how the team came back in the set. "When it's a close game we look at each other and we know that we're going to win. We're going to get those final points. We're going to fight."

Rachel Aiello (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Kailey Falk (York, N.Y.) tallied eight and six kills, respectively. Both also led the team defensively with 17 and 13 digs.

"This team, better than most, has a really good way of staying the course and not getting rattled," Braun said. "We showed that in the first match we played against them, we've showed that in numerous other matches, and I thought we showed that today."
