FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Hilbert Hawks dropped the Fredonia women's basketball team, 64-55, on Monday in Steele Hall.
Jenna Einink (Westfield/Chautauqua Lake) led Fredonia with 20 points.
Justice Nauden (Albion/Albion) added 14 points, including four-of-five shooting from three-point land.
Hilbert opened the game scoring the first nine points before
Alisha Szumigala (Forestville/Forestville) got the Devils on the board with a layup. Hilbert then received back-to-back layups by Katelyn Proy to give the Hawks their biggest lead of the first half, 13-2.
Fredonia eventually tied the game at 20 with 1:32 to go on a pair of free throws by
Emily Lasher (Wilson/Wilson).
The half ended with Hilbert up 25-23. Hilbert shot just 30 percent, but led 20-14 in rebounding, including 9 offensive boards.
Fredonia shot 38 percent from the floor, and totaled 3 offensive rebounds. Nauden led Fredonia with 8 points and Einink had 6. Emily Gawlak led the Hawks with 9 points.
The Hawks opened the second half similar to the first, scoring the first eight points before Einink connected on a hook shot to make it a 33-25 game in favor of Hilbert.
Hilbert would see its biggest lead of the game, 47-31, after a pair of free throws by Gawlak at the 2:31 mark of the third quarter. Fredonia scored the final four points of the third on layups by Lasher and Einink to make it a 47-35 game.
Midway through the fourth quarter Fredonia scored eight straight points to make it a five-point game, 52-47. Hilbert bounced right back with eight straight of their own to go up 60-47.
The Devils pulled within five points again following another eight-point run. Nauden nailed a pair of threes around a layup by Einink cutting the lead to 60-55 with 1:31 to play. The Devils were unable to score down the stretch.
Hilbert (2-3) finished the game with four free throws to give the margin of victory. Gawlak finished with 17 points, while Proy added 14 and 13 rebounds.
Sydney Turley (Cheektowaga/Cleveland Hill) added 9 points, and
Jacque Law (Lime Lake/Pioneer) had 9 rebounds, 6 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals.
The Devils (1-4) travel to Plattsburgh and Potsdam on Dec. 1 and 2 to open conference play.
