PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's basketball team fell short to Plattsburgh, 65-58, in its SUNYAC opener on Friday. Senior
Jacque Law (Lime Lake, N.Y./ Pioneer) and junior
Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y/ Chautauqua Lake) led the way, each putting up 19 points and 3 assists.
For the Cardinals Frannie Merkel contributed 20 points, 5 assists and 5 blocks.
Plattsburgh held a large advantage in three-point shooting, connecting on 9 of 14 shots, compared to Fredonia's 1 for 10. Conversely, Fredonia dominated at the charity stripe, going 23 of 33 (69.7%) to Plattsburgh's 8 of 18 (44.4%).
Fredonia made a run in the fourth quarter capped by a layup from Einink with 5:31 left in the game to bring the Blue Devils within five points, 50-35. Plattsburgh State's Brook Benna then knocked down two consecutive three pointers both assisted by Merkel to put the game out of reach.
The Blue Devils defense forced 25 turnovers and came up with 16 steals. Law had the game high with 6 steals with freshman guard
Sydney Turley (Cheetowaga N.Y./ Cleveland Hill) added 4 more. Law and
Emily Lasher (Wilson, N.Y./Wilson) led the team with 8 rebounds each.
The Blue Devils drop to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the SUNYAC. The Cardinals improve to 1-3/1-0.
The Devils travel to Potsdam tomorrow afternoon for a 1 p.m. tip.
