ALFRED, N.Y. -- Tied at 69 with :40 seconds left, a pair of free throws by Alfred's Jamie Wilcox put the Saxons up for good in a 73-69 victory over the Fredonia women's basketball team on Tuesday. Wilcox added two more free throws down the stretch to give the final.
Jenna Einink (Westfield, NY / Chautauqua Lake) finished with 24 points and nine rebounds to lead the Devils.
Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg / Hamburg) added 15 points, while
Jacque Law (Lime Lake, NY / Pioneer) went for 10 points and 8 rebounds.
Wilcox paced Alfred (1-2) with 28 points while Amanda Figuroa added 18.
Alfred scored scored the game's first points on a layup. Fredonia then ran off eight straight for an early 8-2 lead.
Justice Nauden and Chiacchia hit back to back threes, and Chiacchia converted a layup.
Alfred bounced right back with a 15-4 run to take a 17-12 lead after one quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Fredonia pulled within one, 19-18, after a pair of free throws by Law. Alfred responded with the next seven points before Chiacchia broke the momentum with a free throw.
The Devils battled back into the lead after a layup by Einink put them up, 32-31. Another three by Chiacchia put the Devils up four before Wilcox nailed a jumper just before the buzzer to make it a 35-33 game at the break. Alfred's Amanda Figuroa led all scorers with 15 points at the half. Chiacchia led the Devils with 13.
At the 4:20 mark of the third quarter, Figuroa nailed a three to give the Saxons a 45-42 lead. From there, the Devils closed the period on a 13-2 run. Einink had nine points -- all from three-point range -- to key the spurt.
Three-and-a-half minutes into the fourth quarter, Alfred tied the game at 59. The teams battled back and forth before Wilcox came up clutch from the free-throw line in the final minute.
Fredonia shot 42 percent from the field compared to 36 percent by Alfred. The Saxons won the battle on the boards, 41-38, including a 16-9 edge in offensive rebounds.
The Devils were 7 for 19 (37 percent) from three point range, while Alfred was 9 for 23 (39 percent). Fredonia was 12 of 14 (86 percent) from the line, and Alfred was 18 of 24 (75 percent). Fredonia was slowed by 28 turnovers, while Alfred committed 24.
The Devils (1-2) are back in action Sunday evening when they travel to Medaille. Their home opener is the following Monday, Nov. 28 when they take on Hilbert College.
