FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Potsdam dealt Fredonia a 3-2 SUNYAC loss in women's soccer Friday afternoon at University Stadium.
Brooke Falsion and Lexi Dean had one goal and one assist each for the Bears (10-3-2 overall / 4-1-1 SUNYAC). Ciara Norris scored an important first-half goal and goalkeeper Delphine Leonard made four saves.
For Fredonia,
Abby Price (Naples, N.Y.) and
Danielle Spring (Allegany, N.Y.) each had a goal and
Marissa Quimby (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) made eight saves. The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 6-9 overall and, more importantly, just 2-4-0 in the SUNYAC heading into a 1 p.m. home game Saturday vs. Plattsburgh.
End-to-end action resulted in numerous scoring chances for both teams and a total of 47 shots. Falsion took nine of those shots for the Bears, who had the better of the chances throughout to go along with a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. Each team hit a cross bar.
The teams were scoreless for the first 35 minutes of the game before the floodgates opened. Falsion broke through first with a header following a cross to the far, right post by Dean in the 36th minute. It was Faison's 11th goal of the season and gave Potsdam a 1-0 lead -- for just 47 seconds. Price evened the score at 1-1 with her fifth goal of the season, a one-timer into the top right corner following a short drop-back cross from
Aleeya Clemons (Olean, N.Y.) in the 37th minute.
Norris put the Bears back on top, 2-1, with her first goal of the season early in the 41st minute. She muscled through three Fredonia defenders to position herself for an open shot 15 yards out, then struck the ball inside the left post. The Bears took the lead into halftime.
Dean scored what amounted to the game-winning goal in the 60th minute. Following a Fredonia turnover, she received a short pass from Falsion just inside the 18-yard line and deflected a shot off a defender. The ball changed direction and slid past a diving Quimby for a 3-1 Potsdam lead. It was Dean's sixth goal of the season.
The Blue Devils cut their deficit in half in the 71st minute. Following a Potsdam foul, a Fredonia free kick, and a scramble for the loose ball, Spring sent a low shot throw a maze of players and inside the left post for her third goal of the season.
Jessica Slack (Syracuse, N.Y.) earned an assist for touching the ball last before Spring's shot.
Fredonia nearly tied the game minutes later when a long shot by
Lauren Cullinan (Clarence, N.Y.) from the right wing clanged off the middle of the cross bar. The Blue Devils continued to pressure yet also had to scurry back several times to keep Potsdam -- most notably Falsion -- from adding an insurance goal.
