FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The New Paltz Hawks, the defending regular-season SUNYAC Champs, dropped a pair of games to Fredonia last season. They gained a measure of revenge, taking a 72-64 victory at Fredonia on Friday. The Hawks closed out the game on a 14-3 run over the final four-and-a-half minutes.
The Devils were led by
Alexis Cheatham (Lockport/Lockport) with 16 points and four assists, and
Sarah Sweazy (Rochester/Rush Henrietta) added 14 points off the bench.
Jacque Law (Machias/Pioneer)and
Jenna Einink (Westfield/Chautauqua Lake) added 12 apiece, while Einink had 10 rebounds and three assists.
New Paltz opened the game with a three-pointer from Lindsay Bettke and kept the lead through the half. The Hawks would lead by as many as 11 points. A Bettke jumper early in the second quarter put them visitors up 27-16. They would take a 37-29 lead into the locker room.
The Devils came out on fire in the third quarter scoring the first 16 points. A layup and a three pointer by Law started things. Einink followed with the next six points on layups. A three by Cheatham and layup Sweazy on a sweet feed from Cheatham completed the rally, giving the Devils a 45-37 lead.
New Paltz would eventually regain the lead on a three pointer by Marion Dietz at the 2:48 mark of the fourth quarter, going up 62-61. A layup by Fredonia's Einink tied the game at 63-all, before Bettke hit the biggest shot of the game, nailing a three pointer with 31 seconds left.
New Paltz' Morgan Roessler nailed five three throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the victory.
New Paltz was led by Bettke with 18 points, while Roessler and Kit Small each recorded double-doubles. Roessler had 15 points and 11 boards off the bench, while Small went for 16 and 12. They improved to 6-4 in the SUNYAC and 9-7 overall.
The Devils play host to Oneonta Saturday at 4 p.m. in Steele Hall.
