Samuel Wilbur (Sagniaw, Mich.) had two goals and an assist to lead Fredonia's offensive onslaught as part of a 7-2 men's hockey win Friday over Western New England.
The first collegiate goals by freshmen defensemen
Brandon Spognardi (Warrington, Pa.) and
Max Blitz (Chino Hills, Calif.) were part of the effort which saw the Blue Devils take a season-high 76 shots on goal, including 34 in the first period.
Fredonia other goals were scored by sophomore winger
Luke Rivera (Pacific Palisades, Calif.), senior center
Mac McAvoy (Port Colborne, Ont.), and sophomore defenseman
Michael Freeman (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.).
Sophomore goaltender
Eric Bogart (London, Ont.) was credited with 35 saves. He allowed goals to Western New England's Tyler Hines and Matt Smethurst.
The Blue Devils improved to 5-7-2 heading into a non-conference meeting with Johnson & Wales at 3 p.m. Saturday in Steele Hall. WNE fell to 5-8-2..
The two goals gave Wilbur six this season, tying for the team lead. Rivera's goal was his second, while McAvoy's was also his second and his first game-winner. Freeman's goal was his first this season.Â
McAvoy's goal put Fredonia on top 3-0 late in the first period. WNE's Hines made it 3-1 before Spognardi restored the Blue Devils three-goal lead at 4-1. Smethurst scored on a power play to make it 4-2 Fredonia. The Blue Devils closed out the game with three unanswered goals, including two in a span of 32 seconds late in the third period.
