BALTIMORE, Md. -- Fredonia scored early, then hung on for a 1-1 men's soccer double-overtime tie with U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
Junior midfielder
Dan Griffin (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville East) volleyed a throw-in by senior defender
Brandon Butts (Schenevaus, N.Y./Charlotte Valley) at the four-minute mark of the first half.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jeremy Bari (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) was immediately called upon and came up with a series of saves. He finished with nine stops in the season-opener, held at Homewood Field on the Johns Hopkins campus.
Bari's lone blemish was a goal by Merchant Marine's Gavin Yingling in the 57th minute. Yingling, an all-region forward, shot into the left corner after receiving a through ball at the top of the box from Jon Tarbox.
Outshot 11-2 in the first half, the Blue Devils had a 12-10 advantage the rest of the way. Senior forward
Parker Healy (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) was credited with a game-high six shots, two of them on goal.
Said Head Coach
P.J. Gondek: "We were down two starters, then Butts and (senior forward Sam) Greco left the game with injuries. We just hung on for the first half. In the second half, we got Butts back and we started to get some rhythm. ... The game turned in our favor and we could have won but a tie is a fair result."
Fredonia is back in action 2 p.m. Sunday vs. Bethany College.
