Sam Greco (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) had a goal and an assist and freshman goalkeeper
Ty Bentham (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) made seven saves as Fredonia defeated John Carroll, 2-0, in men's college soccer Wednesday night.
The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead when Greco scored on a breakaway in the 32nd minute. He received a long, lead pass from
Keith Braun (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois), sidestepped a defender, and left-footed the ball into the opposite corner past the drawn-out goalkeeper. It was Greco's first goal of the season.
The Blue Devils added to its lead in the 73rd minute. A defensive stop and pass ahead by
Matt Belardi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) was gathered by Greco streaking up the left sideline. He crossed the ball to
Parker Healy (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora), who scored in in close for his fourth goal of the season.
John Carroll had several good scoring chances in each half. Bentham was called on to make seven saves for his first collegiate shutout. John Carroll's Matt Gordon made four saves.
Fredonia improved to 7-2-1 heading its SUNYAC -- and Battle By The Lake -- showdown with Western New York rival Buffalo State. Game time is 1 p.m. Saturday at University Stadium.
John Carroll fell to 3-5-1.
