FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia Blue Devils women's tennis team defeated Brockport for the first time in six years, 5-4, at the Steele Hall courts on Saturday.
The third doubles team of senior Phoebe Langdon (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) and sophomore Christine Thomas (Ransomville, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) led off with an 8-5 victory. The senior doubles team of Halee Dickinson (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) and Chloe Cohen (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) put up a fight at second doubles, but fell 8-6.
Brockport also claimed first doubles, with Sara Mensah and Kelsey Shanahan taking an 8-2 decision over Olivia Miller (Springwater, N.Y. / Wayland-Cohocton) and Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg).
Chiacchia, a freshman, defeated her opponent at third singles 6-2, 6-2, extending her personal record to 3-0. Chloe Karnisky (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) a junior, blew past her challenger at fifth singles 6-1, 6-1. Adriana Speach(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), a sophomore, handled her opponent at sixth singles 6-2, 6-2.
Brockport had claimed first and second singles to tie the match at 4-all.
The deciding point came from Dickinson at fourth singles, who won her first set 6-2, and her second set 7-5. That broke the tie and lifted Fredonia to 2-1 this season heading into a Sunday match at Elmira starting at noon.
