FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia senior Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) had five hits -- four for extra-bases -- during a SUNYAC softball doubleheader split Monday with Potsdam.

Forness had an RBI double in last at-bat of the first game, a 5-1 Blue Devil win. She then went 4 for 4 in the second game -- a solo homer in the second, a lead-off single in the fourth, and one-out doubles in the sixth and eighth innings of an 8-3 loss. She raised her batting average to .379.

The split left Fredonia at 8-20 overall and 4-10 in the conference.

Freshman right-hander Emily Shellenberger (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower Catholic) came within one out of recording a shutout in the opener. After retiring the first two Potsdam batters in the top of the seventh, a double and an error followed by a single led to an unearned run. Shellenberger finished with a complete-game six-hitter with two walks and five strikeouts. It was her team-leading fourth win this season.

Offensively, senior Madeline Medina (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and freshman Cassidy Herman (Maybrook, N.Y./Valley) had two hits and one RBI each.

Game 2 started inauspiciously for the Blue Devils. Potsdam lead-off hitter Jordan Ott homered to dead center on the first pitch from sophomore right-hander Megan DeGroat (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall). It was the first of four homers by the Bears in the extra-inning game. Katie Marsman, who went 4 for 4, hit a pair of solo shots, while Ott added a two-run blast as part of a five-run eighth inning.

The loss went to freshman right-hander Erika Whitney (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville), who allowed four runs -- only one earned -- on four hits in four innings of relief. Fredonia junior Knee Nance (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) had two hits and stole two bases, her fourth and fifth the last two days.

Tuesday's scheduled doubleheader at D'Youville has been cancelled to avoid predicted bad weather. Instead, the Blue Devils close out the home portion of their season Wedneday at 3 p.m. when they play host to Rochester Institute of Technology.
