See-saw twinbill results in split

BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Fredonia and Brockport split their SUNYAC baseball doubleheader Saturday. The Blue Devils (16-17, 6-9 SUNYAC) won the first game, 5-4, in 12 innings. The Golden Eagles (18-15, 9-6 SUNYAC) scored a 5-4 win in the nightcap with a ninth-inning walk-off rally.

The see-saw opener saw Fredonia take a 1-0 lead in the second, only to have Brockport tie it 1-1 in the third. After seven regulation innings, each team scored a run in the ninth and two runs in the 11th inning.

The game-winning rally in the 12th when junior Ciro Frontale (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) was hit by a pitch leading off the inning. He was sacrificed to second by sophomore Patrick Sheehan (West Seneca, N.Y./Orchard Park). An infield single by sophomore Joshua Crocetti (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) and a walk to senior Kyle Sherman (North Collins, N.Y./North Collins) -- who was 7 for 11 in the doubleheader -- loaded the bases ahead of an infield groundout by junior Liam Kelly (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon), which plated the go-ahead run.

Sophomore right-hander Bailey Gauthier (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) gave up a one-out bunt single before retiring the side in the 12th to earn the win and improve to 2-2. He pitched three innings of relief, gave up two earned runs, and struck out three. The Fredonia starter was freshman right-hander Luke Kuczewski (Hamburg, N.Y./Orchard Park), who allowed two earned runs on eight hits and seven walks in nine innings.

Offensively, Sherman had four hits, senior Quinn Danahy (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon) two hits in Game 1. Also, senior Dan Cecilia (Utica, N.Y./Whitesboro) had an RBI single in the ninth inning and sophomore Steve Zaprowski (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) a two-out, two-run hit in the 11th inning.

Game 2 also went back-and-forth. Brockport jumped to a 2-0 lead in the fourth. The Blue Devils tied it with two in the top of the fifth. A single by junior Michael Prentice (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Francis) and a walk to junior Alexio Medina (Alden, N.Y./Iroquois) put runners on first and second with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt by Frontale, Prentice scored on Crocetti's infield groundout and Medina scored on a single to center by Sherman.

There were two ties and two lead changes the rest of the way.

Following a two-run Brockport fifth, a single by Prentice, a Brockport throwing error, a sac bunt by Medina, and a sacrifice fly by Frontale made it 3-3 in the seventh. An infield single by Cecelia, double by freshman Kevin Yirinec (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), and a sacrifice fly by freshman pinch-hitter Rob Wiegand (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) put Fredonia on top 4-3 in the eighth. Brockport scored two runs with two outs in the last of the eighth to go back up, 5-4.

Down to their last out, Kelly singled to right to score the tying run in the top of the ninth. Frontale got the inning started with a single.

Brockport's winning rally began with a bunt single on a bang-bang play at first. The runner moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a passed ball, and scored when pinch-hitter Ryan Juergens singled off the glove of Zaprowski (1-1), who came on in relief to start the ninth. He was the third Fredonia pitch to work, following senior right-hander Carl Wolf (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) and junior right-hander Lucas Schaefer (Depew, N.Y./St. Mary's).

The loss was damaging to the Blue Devils' playoff chances. They will need to sweep a three-game series from Plattsburgh next weekend at Ludwig Field and hope that Brockport sweeps New Paltz.

In the meantime, the Blue Devils visit Penn State Behrend for a non-conference game Monday at 4 p.m.
