Hawk lefty stymies Blue Devils twice

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- Fredonia managed just two runs -- one of them unearned -- off New Paltz left-hander Katie Rutcofsky, who pitched the Hawks to 2-0 and 6-2 complete-game wins in a SUNYAC softball doubleheader Friday.

Rutcofsky struck out 15 Blue Devils over the two games and allowed 11 hits. One of them was an RBI single by senior Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) in the first inning of Game 2. It gave Fredonia a 1-0 lead at the time.

The Hawks took command with three runs in the second and two in the third off senior right-hander Aldyn Carlson (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk). Carlson was relieved by freshman Erika Whitney (Harpursville, N.Y. / Harpursville), who allowed only one run on four hits over the final four innings. Junior designated hitter Khee Nance (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) had three hits and senior Alyssa Morgan (Homer, N.Y./Homer) had two hits.

In the opener, freshman right-hander Emily Shellenberger (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower Catholic) gave up two runs -- one unearned -- in the last of the second, the only mark against her during a complete-game four-hitter  The Blue Devils threatened in the top of the seventh as Morgan walked and Forness cracked a pinch-hit single. They were left stranded on second and third.

Offensively, junior Sarah Cuillo (Blasdell, N.Y. / Frontier) had two hits in Game 1. She also had a pinch-hit single in Game 2 to go 3 for 3 on the day.

New Paltz improved to 11-8 overall and 3-1 in the SUNYAC while the Blue Devils fell to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in the conference. They will look to rebound Saturday at Oneonta in a SUNYAC doubleheader scheduled to start at noon.
