Devils handle Hamilton -- Twice

CHAIN OF LAKES, Fla. -- The Fredonia baseball team took a pair of games from Hamilton to open up its Spring Floirida trip on Thursday.

The Blue Devils took Game One, 8-4, and Game Two, 3-2.

Down 3-1 the opener, the Blue Devils opened the top of the fifth with singles by Quinn Danahy and Rob Wiegand, followed by a two-out, two-run double by Michael Prentice and an RBI single by Patrick Sheehan for a 4-3 lead. Sheehan was tossed out at second trying to stretch the hit into a double.

Hamilton responded with a run in the top of the seventh to tie the game.

As it has a number of times already this season, the Fredonia offense came through late. Josh Crocetti led off the seventh with a single -- his third of the day. He advanced to third in a sacrifice and a single by Ciro Frontale. Danahy plated a run by reaching base on an error to give Fredonia a 5-4 lead.

Freshman Kevin Yirinec then delivered a pinch-hit triple to score two more. Liam Kelly singled to score Yirinec and give Fredonia an 8-4 lead.

Lucas Schaefer came in to pitch a perfect seventh to secure the win.

Freshman Ben Atkinson got his first collegiate start. He went five innings, striking out four and walking a pair. The Devils then used Zach Lyman, Bailey Gauthier and Schaefer to fill out the final two innings. Gauthier was credited with the win.

Game Two saw Carl Wolf toss six strong innings for the win. Kyle Smith picked up the save with a scoreless seventh.

Hamilton opened the top of the first with a run. Fredonia tied it in the bottom of the first. With two outs and runners at second and third, Yirinec smoked a ball off the second baseman and huslted down the line, scoring Kyle Sherman.

The Devils added  two more in the fourth. A hit by pitch to Dan Cecilia and a walk to Matt Wilhelm put runners at first and second. They moved up on a sacrifice bunt. After another walk to load the bases, Kelly plated Cecilia with a deep sacrifice fly. Frontale then reached on an error to score the next run.

Hamilton threatened in the top of the sixth. With two out and runners on second and third, Hamilton's Jim Northrup singled to right to score one run. Right fielder Steve Zaprowski then threw out the next runner at the plate to preserve the lead.

For the day, Crocetti was four-for-four with a pair of walks. Quinn Danahy and Liam Kelly both had three hits, with Danahy scoring three times.

"Atkinson gave us a shot in the arm with a stong start and kept it close, and Wolf followed up with another solid effort on the mound," said head coach Matt Palisin. "We had some hard-hit balls early on that were right at people, but we kept swinging. We kept the pressure on and came up with seven runs in the final two innings. It was another team effort. A lot of players contributed in a lot of different ways today."

Hamilton fell to 3-3.

Fredonia improves to 5-3. They take on Minnesota-Morris on Friday at 9 a.m.
