Devils sail past Lakers

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's basketball team kept itself in position for the opportunity to host a home playoff game -- or earn a bye -- with a 75-54 win over Oswego on Friday evening. The Devils improve to 9-4 in the conference and 14-6 overall.

The Devils were paced by Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, N.Y. / Lockport) with 15 points, including a four-for-four performance from the line and a trio of three pointers. Jamie Curry (Ransomville, N.Y. / Wilson) added 13 points and a team-high four assists, and Sabrina Macaulay ended with 12 points and four assists. Reserve guard Khee Nance (Dunkirk, N.Y. / Dunkirk) added 10 points and three assists.

Mary Mazzella led all scorers with 19 points and added six steals and four assists for the Lakers. Tayler Sorel had 15 points. Oswego drops to 1-11 in the SUNYAC and 3-16 overall.

With the win, the Devils (9-4 SUNYAC) maintain a hold on fourth place in the league standings. Three teams -- Geneseo, New Paltz and Oneonta -- are tied for the top spot one-half game ahead of the Devils at 9-3. Brockport (8-4) and Cortland (7-5) are right on their heels. Fredonia has five league games left to play.

The top two teams receive a bye, while the third and fourth-place teams earn a quarterfinal home game against the sixth and fifth-place seeds, respectively.

Fredonia jumped out to an 8-0 lead, only to see the Lakers to go on their own 8-0 run to tie the game. By the end of the first quarter, the Devils were up 17-11. By halftime, they would increase their lead to nine points, 35-26.They outscored the Lakers in both the third and fourth quarters, as Oswego never really threatened. Fredonia's largest lead of 26 points came with 3:51 left in the fourth quarter.

The Devils outshot Oswego 44 percent to 28 percent from the floor to offset the Laker's 46-41 advantage on the boards. The Lakers were nine of 28 from long range, while Fredonia was seven of 22.

The Devils, 14-6 overall, travel to Cortland on Saturday. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
