OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Fredonia men's basketball team dropped a 77-61 decision to the Oswego Lakers on Saturday. Ian Helps was one of three Devils in double-digit scoring, leading the way with 16 points. Richard De La Cruz added 14, and Kareem Brown had 11.Dante Williams led the team with nine rebounds.
Fredonia falls to 5-8 in the SUNYAC and 6-13 overall. Oswego evens its conference mark at 6-6, and moves to 13-6 overall. The Lakers were led by Brian Sortino with 22 points, and Kyle Covely with 21.
Both team had similar nights from the floor, Oswego shooting 27 of 63 (43 percent)Â and the Devils shooting 26 of 62 (42 percent). Oswego held the edge in three pointers, 9-4, and at the free-throw line. The Devils made only eight trips to the charity stripe, converting five, while Oswego was 14 of 18.
Fredonia held the rebounding edge, 38-37.
The Devils stayed close early in the first half. They would hold a 10-8 lead five-and-a-half minutes into the game. Following a three pointer by Covely, Oswego would keep the lead the rest of the way. They outscored Fredonia 35-14 to finish out the half, and take a 43-24 into the break.
The Devils did battle back, outscoring the Laker 37-34 in the second half. They cut the lead to 13 points on several occasions, but would not pull any closer.
The Devils travel to Cortland for a 4 p.m. contest on Saturday.
