Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Devils battle, but come up short

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia men's basketball team had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but came up just short in a 74-72 loss to New Paltz. The Devils were led by Ian Helps (Bronx, N.Y. / Greater New York Academy) with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Kasean Jackson (Ridgewood, N.Y. / Grover Cleveland) finished with 13 points, and Jared Fish (Salamanca, N.Y. / Salamanca) had eight points, three assists and seven rebounds.

New Paltz (3-14, 4-19) was paced by R.J. Rosa with 25 points and Keegan Donovan with 15 points.

Down two with 10 seconds on the clock, Helps was at the line with a chance to tie the game if he made both free-throw shots. The first shot spun out, then Helps intentionally missed the second. Justin Tapper (White Plains, N.Y. / White Plains) grabbed the rebound, but his last-second attempt fell short.

Fredonia led early on, 14-10 at the 13:02 mark of the first half. New Paltz scored on back to back possessions to take the lead. The Devils would tie the game once, at 24-all, before the Hawks pulled away for a 36-31 halftime lead.

The Devils would tie the game three times in the second half before finally taking a lead. With the Hawks up 58-56, Helps and Jackson converted layups on back-to-back possessions for a 60-58 Fredonia advantage with 4:30 left to play.

At the 2:56 mark, New Paltz tied the game when Rosa converted a three-point play. Andrew Senuik and Nick Paquette nailed threes on the next two possessions to complete a 9-0 New Paltz run and give them a 68-62 lead with 1:41 left to play.

New Paltz was able to ice the game by making six of seven free throws down the stretch and hang on for the two-point win.

Fredonia finishes the 2015-2016 campaign at 6-12 in the SUNYAC and 7-17 overall.

The team also recognized its three seniors prior to the start of the game. Eric Zwierlein (Nichols, N.Y. / Tioga) was a four-year member and a team captain. Alexander Grace (Bemus Point, N.Y. / Maple Grove) played two seasons and captained the squad the past two years. Kelvin Munoz (Washington Heights, N.Y. / Marta Valle) played one season.
