Blue Devils sink Lakers

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's basketball team took to the road and defeated the Oswego Lakers, 75-64, Friday night.

Oswego (1-7, 0-3 SUNYAC) opened the game on an 11-5 run but Fredonia remained in firing distance throughout the first quarter. Jumpers by Kathryn Halloran (Angola, N.Y./Immaculata) and Khee Nance (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) kept the Blue Devils within four just past the halfway mark in the quarter.

The Lakers extended their lead to seven until Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, N.Y./ Lockport) completed the rare four-point play with one second left to cut the Laker's lead down to three, 18-15.

The Blue Devils trailed second quarter until two Alicia Szumigala (Forestville, N.Y./Forestville) free throws with 2:22 left, and layups by Jamie Curry (Ransomville, N.Y./Wilson) and Jenna Einink (Westfield, N.Y./Chautauqua Lake) put Fredonia up 34-28.

The Devils took a 34-31 lead into halftime and did not trail the rest of the game.

Fredonia's biggest lead of eight points in the third quarter came after two Einink free throws midway through the quarter, 46-38. Two makes from the free throw line by Courtney Amelee and a layup by Heather Hebert from Oswego cut Fredonia's lead to four, 50-46 at the end of three quarters of play.

A Curry jumper at the 7:47 mark completed an 8-0 run and extended the Devils' lead to 12 as they lead 58-46. From there, the Lakers would get no closer than seven points.

Einink, a sophomore, recorded her second straight double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. She shot 8 of 19 from the floor. Cheatham, a senior, also scored 18 points and dished out 8 assists.

Szumigala, a junior, netted 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Curry finished with eight points and eight boards.

The Blue Devils improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the SUNYAC. They are back in action tomorrow at Cortland. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m.
