SUNYAC see-saw affair goes to Oswego

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- After assisting on the first two goals, Oswego's Alexa Restante added the game-winning goal in her team's 3-2 SUNYAC women's soccer win Saturday over Fredonia at University Stadium.

Restante decided the see-saw struggle in the 63rd minute when she cleaned up a rebound to the left of Fredonia freshman goalkeeper Jordan Cahill (Stephentown, N.Y./Berlin).

Mary Morrison and Sarah Krupp had the first two Oswego goals while Abby Price (Naples, N.Y./Naples) and Maria Gordon (Stephentown, N.Y./Berlin) scored for the Blue Devils. Cahill, in her first collegiate starting assignment, was credited with nine saves. Oswego's Melissa Siegfried made seven stops.

Oswego improved to 5-4-3 overall and 2-3-1 in the SUNYAC. The loss left Fredonia at 3-11-0 overall and 0-5-0 in the conference.

Two Oswego turnovers led to early Fredonia scoring chances. Price converted the first when she one-time a shot from midfield about 30 yards out midway through the fifth minute. It was her first goal of the season. Siegfried then made a point-blank stop of a header by Audrey Yokopovich (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) after a pretty three-way set up from Alexis Moreland (Newfane, N.Y./Newfane) to Gordon to Yokopovich in the box.

A Fredonia misplay in the box led to Oswego's first goal. Restante began the play with a corner kick, which Jordan bobbled. Morrison headed the deflection over the top of Cahill and two teammates early in the 20th minute.

The teams traded goals early in the second half.

Oswego took a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute when Grupp one-timed a chip from Restante from the left wing to the opposite post. Gordon countered in the 52nd minute with a rush at net and re-direction of a free kick from Olivia Coccitto (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport).

The Lakers' go-ahead goal came after a short goal kick by Fredonia. Leslie Goldman settled the ball and left-footed a low shot to the far post which Cahill stopped with a diving save. Restante was all alone to gather the rebound and score her second goal of the season.

Fredonia's best chance to score the equalizer came with 12 minutes left. Moreland took two point-blank shots, the first blocked by a defender on the goal line and the second stopped by Siegfried, who had recovered from coming out of the crease to make the initial stop.
