Devils top Bears, 3-1

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's volleyball team took down Potsdam, 3-1, on Friday evening. The Devils cruised to a 25-12 opening-set win before Potsdam pushed them in the final three sets.

Tied at 6-all in the second set, the Bears ran off five straight and would keep the lead the rest of the way. The Devils pulled close, 13-14, before Potsdam ran off nine straight to make it 23-13. Fredonia responded by scoring seven straight, but would ultimately fall, 25-20.

The third set saw Fredonia score first and build a 14-10 lead. Four straight points by Potsdam tied the score at 14-all. Potsdam would eventually build a 23-21 lead.

The Devils would rally for the final four points to win 25-23.

The fourth and final set was also tightly contested. Late in the match, Potsdam scored six straight to take a 22-20 lead. Fredonia would eventually tie the set at 24-all before Sara Madison (Rochester, N.Y. / Penfield) and Jane Garrity (Victor, N.Y. / Victor) recorded back-to-back kills to win the set 26-24.

Kristen Stanek (Hamburg, N.Y. / Orchard Park) led the offense with 14 kills and Garrity added nine. Megan Collins (Burlingham, N.Y. / Pine Bush) chipped in eight. Amanda Mosack (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Schroeder) had 44 assists.

Kailey Falk (York, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy) led the team with four service aces and 22 digs. Rachel Poirier (West Seneca, N.Y. / West Seneca West) had 20 digs and Rachel Aiello (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) had 18.

Garrity chipped in six blocks and Collins had eight.

Fredonia improved to 17-9 overall and 5-2 in the SUNYAC. Potsdam drops to 13-12 and 1-6.

In the evening's other match, Brockport (25-2 and 7-0) downed Oswego (13-12 and 4-3) by a 3-1 count.

Pool Play continues tomorrow in Dods Hall. In the 10 a.m. matches, Fredonia takes on Brockport, while Oswego and Potsdam match up. The second set of matches are Fredonia vs. Oswego and Potsdam vs. Brockport.
