NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- Fredonia's 3-1 men's soccer loss Friday to New Paltz further fuzzied the SUNYAC playoff picture for the Blue Devils and four other teams.
While a win Friday would have guaranteed Fredonia a playoff berth, the loss opened the door to Geneseo, New Paltz, Potsdam, and Plattsburgh to claim any one of the three remaining playoff berths. All five teams are separated by two points in the standings.
The Blue Devils (10-6-1 overall, 4-4 SUNYAC) still control their own destiny when they take on Oneonta at 1 p.m. Saturday. Yet, they might end up needing help if they do not earn a point against the Red Dragons.Â
Also at stake is the potential of a home game for one of the five teams. The SUNYAC first-round games -- No. 6 at No. 3 and No. 5 at No. 4 -- are next Saturday.
Bryan Sibble (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse)Â put Fredonia on top, 1-0, against New Paltz with his fourth goal of the season. It came on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard line which Sibbble bent around the far post early in the 11th minute.
New Paltz pulled even 1-1 on a goal by Aleco Podias in the 42nd minute. The Hawks then took command on goals by Sam Spence in the 58th minute and Thomas Preece in the 70th minute.
Fredonia goalkeeper
Ty Bentham (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) made two saves.
