BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The first two points in the Battle by the Lake went to Buffalo State for its 3-0 women's soccer win Saturday over the Fredonia Blue Devils.

The Bengals eruped for all three goals in the second half, two by Melissa Smith, while Taylor Carillo was called on to make three stops in net for the shutout.

After a scoreless first half, Smith put Buffalo State in front with a highlight reel tally. A flip throw-in led to a header, then a second header by Smith in the 51st minute.

A perfect cross to Smith in the 55th minute and a cross leading to a header by Lindsay Mahoney in the 74th minute resulted in the next two Buffalo State goals.

The Blue Devils were outshot 22-3, with three different players taking one shot each.

Fredonia fell to 3-8-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the SUNYAC while Buffalo State moved to 7-1-2 overall, 3-0-0 in SUNYAC, and took a 2-0 lead the Battle by the Lake series between the two Western New York schools.
