FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia led 65-64 with 1:20 to go, but Plattsburgh rallied for the game's final five points in a 69-65 home loss to the Cardinals.
Fredonia had four players in double digits.
Sabrina Macaulay (Newark)Â led with 14 and
Alexis Cheatham (Lockport) had 13 with three assists and three steals.
Jacque Law (Machias, N.Y. / Pioneer) had 12 and
Jenna Einink (Mayville, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) had 10 off the bench.
Following a steal by Cheatham, and outlet pass to Law who created a nifty assist to Curry, the Devils were up 65-64 with 1:20 left to play.
From that point, the Devils could not muster any offense, as a free throw by Plattsburgh's Stephanie Linder and jumpers by Allie Taylor and Linder iced the game in the final minute.
To start the game, the Devils jumped out to an early 10-3 lead. Their biggest lead of ten came in the closing minute of the first quarter.
Sarah Sweazy hit a jumper with 38 seconds left to put Fredonia up 15-5. The Devils led 15-7 after the first.
In the second quarter, with the Devils up 17-7, Plattsburgh went on a 7-0 run to pull within three, 17-14. Fredonia would lead until just under three minutes to go before the half, when a Devona Paul layup tied the game at 26-all.
Plattsburgh's Stephanie Linder gave the Cardinals the lead on the next possession with a layup. Cheatham ended the half with a layup and a three to give Fredonia a 31-28 lead. Fredonia had an opportunity for a larger lead, but shot only four of 10 from the line in the half.
The third quarter saw the Devils lead by as many as ten. Plattsburgh battled back, eventually tying the game at 55 at the 7:15 mark of the fourth quarter. There would be six more lead changes before the final buzzer.
Plattsburgh outshot the Devils 44 percent to 35 percent from the floor and held a 51-33 edge in rebounding. Fredonia did shoot 11 of 13 from the line in the second half to finish at 65 percent (15 of 23) for the game. The Cards were 14 of 20 (70 percent). Fredonia made four three pointes, compared to one by Plattsburgh.
The Devils drop to 13-6 overall and 8-4 in the SUNYAC. Plattsburgh moves to 11-7 and 5-6 in the conference. They were led by Paul with 22 points and Taylor with 21. Paul added 16 boards.
The Devils travel to Oswego and Cortland next weekend.
