Dragons top Devils

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- In a matchup between the two top teams in the SUNYAC standings, round one went to the Oneonta Red Dragons, as they defeated visiting Fredonia 77-52 on Saturday.  With the victory, Oneonta (11-4/7-1 SUNYAC) takes over sole possession of first place in the conference, while the loss drops Fredonia to 12-5 overall and 7-3 in conference play.

Fredonia was led by freshman Jenna Einink (Mayville, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) who came off the bench to score 14 points. Sabrina Macaulay (Newark, N.Y. / Newark) and Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, N.Y. / Lockport) had nine points apiece, with Macaulay grabbing a team-high eight rebounds and three assists.

The Red Dragons seized control of the game in the opening quarter with a 16-5 run over the final 6:32 to take a 21-14 lead into the second quarter.  Oneonta's Bryn Loomis ended the first quarter with a put back as the buzzer sounded.  She was fouled on the play and made the free throw to finish off the three-point play.  Loomis came off the bench for the Red Dragons to lead all scorers in the game with 18 points.

Oneonta continued to pull away from the Blue Devils in the second quarter, as they outscored Fredonia, 24-15, to grab a 45-29 lead at halftime.

Oneonta's Lyteshia Price and Cara Adams joined Loomis in double figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

As a team, the Devils got to the free-throw line only eight times, shooting 50 percent. Oneonta was seven for 11. Fredonia won the rebound battle, 46-45. The Dragons held a decisive advantage forcing 24 turnovers, while committing only 12.

The Devils return home next weekend to take on Potsdam and Plattsburgh. The Devils defeated both opponents on the road earlier this season. Saturday also marks the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) in Steele Hall.
