Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Different day, same result

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- On Friday evening, junior Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, N.Y. /Lockport) was again at the free throw line with the game hanging in the balance. And just like Tuesday, she hit the tying and go ahead shots from the charity stripe to win the game in the closing seconds.

Down 57-56, Cheatham hit both of her free throw attempts to put the Devils up one with 22 seconds to go. Following a missed layup by New Paltz, Cheatham was back at the line putting the finishing touches on a 60-57 victory, once again hitting both attempts.

Her heroics in Tuesday's 94-92 win over Buffalo State came in overtime with 12 seconds left to play.

Cheatham finished with 13 points, going eight for eight from the line. Senior Sabrina Macaulay (Newark, N.Y. / Newark) turned in a dominant performance with 17 points and 19 rebounds. Jacque Law (Machias, N.Y. / Pioneer) had 11 points and freshman Sarah Sweazy (Rochester, N.Y. / Rush Henrietta) had 13 points and three steals off the bench.

Unlike Tuesday's game where Fredonia jumped out to an early 15-point lead, the Devils found themselves down by as many as nine in the first half. They would trail 35-28 at the break.

New Paltz led until the 9:29 mark of the fourth quarter. Sweazy nailed a free throw to tie the game at 49-all. Macaulay made a layup on the next possession to give the Devils their first lead since they led 10-9 early in the first quarter.

New Paltz (9-5 overall, 4-3 SUNYAC) was led by Kit Small with 18 points. Courtney Irby had 10 points and 16 rebounds.

Fredonia improves to 12-4 and 7-2 in conference play. They travel to Oneonta Saturday. The Red Dragons improved to 6-1 with a 54-53 win over Buffalo State on Friday.
