Fredonia falls to Buffalo State, 4-2

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Buffalo State emerged with a 4-2 SUNYAC win Friday over Fredonia in men's hockey at Steele Hall.

Ryan Salkeld scored at 15:41 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie. Sean Hrivnak added an insurance goal on a power-play with 1:08 remaining.

Salkeld and Hrivnak finished with a goal and an assist each while Nick Berst and Taylor Price had one goal each for the Bengals, who improved to 8-5-4 overall and 4-3-1 in the SUNYAC.

The Blue Devils are 5-9-3 overall and 2-6-2 in SUNYAC with six conference games remaining.

Berst opened the scoring when he converted a Fredonia turnover into a quick shot from just inside the blue line at 6:03 of the first period. Fredonia pulled even when Oskar Gerhardson (Haessleholm, Sweden) found Jimmy Morgan (Higlands Ranch, Col.) behind the Buffalo defense. Morgan converted the breakaway for his sixth goal of the season and a 1-1 tie at 9:07 of the opening period.

Taylor Bourne (Calgary, Alberta) gave Fredonia its only lead with a backhander from the left circle at 6:17 of the second period. It was Bourne's eighth goal of the season. Marcus Ortiz (Richardson, Texas) picked up an assist. It was Buffalo State's turn to pull even. Point-to-point passing led to Pryce's goal at 16:18 of the second period.

Salkeld's game-winner came on a shot from the right point near the Fredonia bench. The insurance goal by Hrivnak came on another point shot.

The Bengals outshot the Blue Devils, 48-31. Buffalo State goaltender Mike DeLaVergne made 29 saves while Eric Bogart (London, Ont.) made 44 stops.

Buffalo State also earned one point in The Battle By The Lake to cut Fredonia's lead to 8-7.

The Blue Devils are back at home next Friday vs. Plattsburgh.
