The Law on Devils' side

Alexis 'Cheats' Bengals out of win

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Sophomore Jacque Law (Machias, N.Y. / Pioneer) made a pair of free throws with just one tick of the clock left in regulation to tie the game, and Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, N.Y. / Lockport) sank another pair of free throws to give the Devils a one-point lead with 12 seconds left in overtime to claim a 94-92 victory at Buffalo State.

Fredonia improved to 11-4 overall and 6-2 in SUNYAC play. The Bengals drop to 6-9 and 2-6 in the conference.

Both Law and Cheatham finished with 24 points, while senior Sabrina Macaulay (Newark, N.Y. / Newark) added 13 and freshman Jenna Einink (Mayville, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) finished with 12 points, six blocks and four steals.

Cheatham also dished out a career-high 10 assists, and nailed four three-point field goals. The 94 points is the fifth most in team history, going back to 1992.

Things looked good for the Blue Devils early on, as they scored 36 points in the first quarter, leading by as many as 15 points. The pace kept up through the second quarter, with the Devils leading 55-44 at the half. The 55 points was the highest output in any half for the team this season.

At the break, Cheatham had 16 points and seven assists, while Einink scored 10 points, grabbed a team-high six rebounds and recorded five of her six blocked shots. Fredonia shot a blistering 60 percent from the floor, including six of 10 on three-point attempts.

Things slowed down in the second half, with Buffalo State outscoring the Devils 41-30 to force overtime.

In the fourth quarter, the Bengals finally caught up to Fredonia. They whittled away at the deficit until Clarisa Matias sank a three pointer to tie the game at 72-all with 7:32 left. The next possession saw the Bengals take the lead on a Harriet Hernandez layup.

From there on, there would be five lead changes and two ties to finish the fourth.

Law and Cheatham continued to be the key for Fredonia in overtime. Buff State would build a 90-86 lead halfway through the extra frame. Cheatham then nailed her fourth and final three pointer to make it a one-point contest.

Two possessions later, Law would convert a layup to put Fredonia up 91-90. Buff State regained the lead on a jumper by Krystal Watson with 15 seconds left.

Then with 12 seconds left, Cheatham nailed both free throws in what would prove to be the game winners. The Bengals last gasp resulted in a missed layup before they fouled Sarah Sweazy who hit one of two free throws with one second left to give the final.

Buffalo State had five players in double digits. Britt Perry and Jordon Yastremski had 20 apiece. Keyonte Edwards and Krystal Waston had 16 each, with Edwards and Perry garnering 16 and 12 rebounds, respectively.

For the game, Fredonia was 18 of 25 (72 percent) from the line, while the Bengals were 15 of 23 (65 percent). Buff State held a 58-35 edge on the boards.

The Devils are back on the road this weekend, heading to New Paltz and Oneonta. With the Devils currently at 6-2 in the SUNYAC, they take on 5-1 Oneonta, who share the conference lead with Cortland. At 4-2, New Paltz is in the mix as well.
